It’s almost time! The perch of the blog is insured. I am joined by the great Mark Bader to my left and the inimitable Shane Sparks to my right!

125: Pat McKee (Minnesota) vs. Kysen Terukina (Iowa State)

1st Period: These guys are used to being the first game of an event. Terukina representing the state of Iowa via Hawaii, McKee is a local product of Minnesota. Good action but no goals after one minute. Terkuina throws a single sweep but McKee defends with a strong chest bandage. Still no score. 1 minute at the end of the period. Another shot from Terukina, it’s deep but McKee turns his head and scores the takedown. Impressive pat counter. Solid round by McKee, Terukina stays close enough to the mat for the final minute and McKee has a 2-0 lead and 55 seconds of driving time into the break

2nd period: McKee chooses the fund. He gets up and is out after about 15 seconds. A couple of shots from Terukina, hanging up from McKee. He bends the knee straight back. McKee pounces on the head. Terukina may have thought they were going out of bounds, but McKee drags his toe. Readjust, barely within limits yet, and there’s the fall! Pat McKee wins first All-Star Classic fight since 2018 via pinfall!

133: Lucas Byrd (Illinois) vs. Michael McGee (Arizona State)

1st period: McGee comes out in a Sunkist Kids freestyle tank top. Byrd is wearing the traditional Illinois singlet with a block I. All of that is permitted, as these games are exhibitions. It’s also why they wear red and blue instead of red and green anklets. No goals in the middle of the 1st half. Byrd with the first penetrating attack with about a minute to go. And he converts for two, McGee tried to fold but Byrd smelled the move. McGee escapes after 28 seconds of RT. 2-1 Byrd leads on the break.

2nd period: Byrd chooses down. He builds into a quad-pod. And Byrd goes out saving 3 seconds of RT in favor of him. 3-1 lead for Illinois. Another nice shot from Byrd, got leg up, McGee goes over the top, grabs some corners, no crotch lock. There is a fight. McGee is close. No score! Time’s up, and Mark Perry, cornered for McGee, throws the challenge brick. Thorough review and confirmed call. No takedowns, still 3-1 Bryd.

3rd period: McGee down and a stand to Granby and McGee is out in about 10 seconds. 3-2 hour, RT is not a factor. Last minute of regulation, still standing. No stall calls on either wrestler. McGee attacks furiously. Byrd doesn’t let himself get close and Byrd makes it 3-2!

157: Bryce Andonian (Virginia Tech) vs. Will Lewan (Michigan)

1st bout: Andonian is in vision at the rendezvous and Lewan is as tough as they come. It should be fun, even though, duh, everyone should be. No score after one minute. Andonian reels in and unleashes a deep double but Lewan picks him up with overhooks and stops the attack. No score as we get to short time. And a perfectly timed brace from Lewan scores with just 6 seconds left in the period. 2-0 at rest.

2nd period: Lewan starts down, and is out in 6 seconds so the RT clock goes triple zero and Lewan has a 3-0 lead. Another brace from Lewan but Andonian stops him. Bryce slaps a bodylock above and below. Lewan fights his way out. Good burst in short time but no score. Another burst as the clock hits zero, again 3-0 Lewan.

3rd period: Andonian with gyrus on the bottom. He goes out immediately, 3-1. RT is not a factor. Lewan isn’t afraid to go upper body. A few good bursts but still 3-1 with one minute remaining in regulation. Andonian picks up the pace but Lewan doesn’t allow him to block anything. Time runs out and Will Lewan wins 3-1!

197: Jacob Warner (Iowa) vs. Rocky Elam (Missouri)

1st bout: Our first of two consecutive bouts with Hawkeye. Warner was an NCAA runner-up last season and a three-time All-American. Elam is a two-time All-American. This is the first collegiate meeting between the two. Warner comes up with “Fat Bottom Girls”, Elam fittingly comes up with the Rocky theme song. Elam is an early single and scores fast. Warner out fast, Elam leads 2-1. Collar ties and hand fights, not many level changes in the next 90 seconds. The period ends with no more scores, always 2-1 Missouri.

2nd period: Elam below. False start and caution on Rocky. Clean start, Warner gets up and goes back. It takes a few tries but Elam is out after about 30 seconds. Shooting Elam. Stalemate with 44 seconds on the clock, 3-1 Elam. We break for blood, it seems to be from Elam. We’re back in business. No scores to end the period, still 3-1 Elam, RT not a factor.

3rd period: Warner starts from the bottom. He sits down and is out in 4 seconds. Excellent exchange, attack by Elam, reattachment by Warner, both close to scoring. Another attack from Elam, he’s got a leg, he’s chewing the clock and the takedown to the limit. 5-2 Elam now and has a 3-point lead 52 seconds into the second half.
